Aix-en-Provence Cathedral Doors

After several days of trying to see the cathedral doors, Isabelle and I finally arrived at the correct time. They only open in the mornings at 11:15 and only if you ask them. Since the carvings could be ruined by the weather and/or vandalism, they are never shown except when supervised by one of the office volunteers.  The cutest little old lady came with us, but she was too small to do it herself, so we had the privilege of tugging the massive doors open.

She took time and really explained the meaning of the carvings to us.

The walnut doors were commissioned in 1505 and feature four major old testament prophets, Isaiah, Ezekiel, Daniel and Jeremiah.

The detail involved is amazing.

Can I have this on my house...?

  1. 1505! They probably spent years on the carving. Sigh.
